Historical Events of Significance in the U.S. & Poland commemorated in the month of April

The World - April 2nd, 2005

The 19th Anniversary of the passing of our beloved Pope John Paul II - now St. John Paul the Great.

U.S. - April 4th, 1968

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, TN. King's death had a profound impact on the Civil Rights Movement, and his legacy continues to influence social justice efforts.

Poland - April 10th, 2010

Referred to as the Smolensk Air Disaster, the Polish Air Force plane carrying President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and other high-ranking officials crashed near Smolensk, Russia. The delegation was enroute to attend a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. The tragic event is commemorated each year in Poland.

U.S. - April 12th, 1861

The Civil War began with the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC. This event marked the start of a devastating conflict that would shape the nation's history.

Poland - April 13th, 1943

The Battle of Raclawice was a significant conflict during the Kosciuszko Uprising against foreign partitions of Poland. The battle resulted in a Polish victory over the Russian forces. Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a national hero in Poland, played a key role in the uprising.

U.S. - April 14th, 1912

The RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank during its maiden voyage from Southhampton to New York. The tragic event resulted in the loss of over 1,500 lives and led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations.

U.S. - April 15th, 1865

President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC. Lincoln's death had a profound impact on the nation during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era.

U.S. - April 18th, 1775

The American Revolution began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. These clashes between colonial militia and British forces marked the start of the war for American independence.

Poland - April 19th, 1943

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began, when Jewish residents of the Warsaw Ghetto resisted the German attempt to liquidate the ghetto and deport its remaining inhabitants to concentration camps. The uprising lasted for almost a month and is remembered as an act of defiance against the Holocaust.

U.S. - April 30th, 1789

George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States in New York City. This event marks the inauguration of the nation's first leader under the newly ratified Constitution.
