Historical Events, Milestones and Achievements in the U.S. & Poland in the month of May

In addition to Mother's Day which we celebrate this year on May 12th and Memorial Day which is commemorated on May 27th, here are some historical events of significance that occurred in the month of May:

U.S. - May 1st, 1931

The Empire State Building in New York City officially opened to the public. At the time, it was the tallest building in the world.

Poland - May 1st, 2004

Poland officially became a member of the European Union, along with several other Eastern European countries.

Poland - May 2nd, 2004

Along with several other Central and Eastern European countries, Poland jointed NATO, strengthening its ties with Western Europe and enhancing its security.

Poland - May 3rd, 1791

The Constitution was adopted by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was one of the first modern constitutions in Europe and is celebrated as a symbol of Polish national identity both in Poland and in many cities across the United States.

U.S. - May 4th, 1970

The Kent State shootings took place, where members of the Ohio National Guard opened fire on students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. Four students were killed, and nine others were injured.

Poland - May 4th, 1945

The Soviet Red Army captured Berlin, effectively ending World War II in Europe. Poland, which had suffered greatly during the war, saw significant political and territorial changes as a result of the war's end.

U.S. - May 10th, 1869

The First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in Promontory Summit, Utah, connecting the eastern and western United States by rail.

Poland - May 11-18, 1944

The Anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino. This battle during World War II involved Polish forces, particularly the Polish II Corps, under the command of General Władyslaw Anders, in a crucial assault against German defenses in Italy. The victory at Monte Cassino was a significant achievement for the Allies and a point of national pride for Poland.

Poland - May 18th, 1920

The Battle of Warsaw began during the Polish-Soviet War. This battle, also known as the Miracle at the Vistula, resulted in a decisive Polish victory over the Soviet forces and is considered a turning point in the war.

U.S. - May 18th, 1980

The eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state occurred, causing significant destruction and loss of life.

U.S. - May 20th, 1927

Charles Lindbergh completed the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight, flying from New York to Paris in the Spirit of St. Louis.

U.S. - May 25th, 1961

President John F. Kennedy announced the goal of sending a man to the moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade, leading to the Apollo program and eventually the moon landing in 1969.
