November 11th - A Day of National Renewal

There is a fascinating historical overlap between Veterans Day in the U.S. and Poland's Independence Day - both are commemorated on November 11th, and both trace their origins to the end of World War 1 in 1918.

Originally called Armistice Day, it marks the end of WW1, when the armistice with Germany took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all U.S. military veterans, not just those who served in WW1. It recognizes all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces - living or deceased, in war or peace. Veterans Day is celebrated with parades, ceremonies, and moments of reflection across the country.

Independence Day (Dzień Niepodległości) - on the same day, November 11, 1918 Poland regained independence after 123 years of partition by Austria, Prussia, and Russia. Celebrates the re-establishment of the Polish state, led by military hero Józef Piłsudski, who took command and formed a new government. It is a day of national pride, parades, and remembrance of Poland's struggle for sovereignty.

Both holidays commemorate the end of a global conflict and the beginning of national renewal. They reflect the importance of military service - whether in securing freedom (Poland) or defending it (U.S.) November 11th becomes a universal symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and the hope for peace.

Thursday November 27th - Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is a time to pause and reflect on the blessings - both big and small - that shape our lives. It's a moment to express gratitude for the people who lift us up, the challenges that help us grow, and the traditions that connect us across generations. Whether gathered around a table or reaching out from afar, being thankful reminds us of the strength found in community, the joy of shared stories, and the hope that comes from recognizing the good in each day. In giving thanks, we honor not just what we have, but who we are together.

The Officers & Directors of the PACCF wish you and your family a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving holiday.
